Shamans
Character
Shamans are, in essence, the most powerful creatures in Sauria. They usually appear to be ordinary characters but can make their eyes glow like starlight to show their title or while using their powers. They are skilled healers and highly knowledgeable, constantly gaining new wisdom from the spiritual realm. For example, if a character’s loved one has died, a Shaman can learn anything about the character (name, personality, etc.) from the deceased loved one. (The Shaman isn’t required to be RP’d communicating with the dead to learn these things. If it’s implied that a spirit knew something about a living character, the Shaman can automatically learn it through his/her connection with spirits.)
When a character is called (usually in a dream) to become a Shaman, s/he undergoes an initiation process during which s/he contracts an unknown, seemingly deadly illness. While sick, s/he is weak and vulnerable, but it is said that spirits cloak him/her from danger during this time. In a few days, his/her strength nearly gives out, and s/he temporarily departs for the spiritual realm. There, s/he is imbued with the knowledge of spirits and healing. S/he then returns to his/her physical form and wakes up healthy and an official Shaman, much wiser and stronger than before.
Reincarnation
Shamans are the only living beings who can see spirits, and the only characters who can perform reincarnations. To be reincarnated, a spirit must seek out a Shaman, who will then ask the spirit for a maximum of three memories that s/he wants to keep after being reborn. These memories can be changed to different ones at any time up until the Shaman officially approves the reincarnation, though the spirit needs to let the Shaman know about any such changes. The post detailing the three wanted memories must be at least 225 words (150 if the spirit only wants to keep two memories, 75 to keep one). Memories stack with each reincarnation, so a character that has died and been reincarnated twice might have chosen to keep up to six memories total, etc.
Then, the spirit must perform one task of the Shaman’s choosing. Only during this stage is a spirit able to talk to and be heard by other living creatures, although the spirit will remain invisible and intangible. If the task is done successfully, the Shaman can approve the spirit’s reincarnation, at which point the Shaman’s IC work is done.
The final step is to wait for the next breeding pair of the same genus as the spirit (if the spirit was a hybrid, s/he can choose either parent's genus). The Shaman’s player should post the breeding results and specify that the spirit is being reincarnated in one of the eggs. (If someone else has already posted the results, the Shaman’s player can simply add the reincarnated character onto the results in a reply.) This is mainly for the players to know OOC; the parents will not necessarily know that one of their offspring had a past life.
Reincarnated characters keep their names, but whether their physical characteristics and personalities change is up to the player. Apart from the memories they chose to keep (from their latest reincarnation as well as any past ones), they will not remember anything from their past lives. At first, they will not remember even having lives prior to their current ones, either (but with enough reincarnations, they may start to realize the reason they have so many memories that they don’t recall actually living out). Nor will they remember meeting Shamans or anything else from when they were spirits.
Player
Shaman players help to moderate the site, ensuring that rules are being followed. They also give out breeding results.
The Shaman title goes to the player’s main character. If this character dies and will not be reincarnated, the title can be transferred to one of the player’s other characters. The next character does not have to redo the initiation process.
On the other hand, if a deceased Shaman is reincarnated, s/he retains his/her shamanic wisdom since it is gained spiritually instead of physically, so to speak, and isn’t affected by being reborn in a new body. The rest of the reincarnation process is the same as with regular characters.
